William Earl Thomas, Jr., 90, of Mifflinburg, entered into rest on Monday, December 25, 2023 at his residence.
Bill was born on November 8, 1933 in Mifflinburg, a son of the late William Earl and Margaret (Sterling) Thomas. On November 25, 1955, in New Cumberland, he married the former Nancy C. Metz, who survives.
Bill was a 1951 graduate of Mifflinburg High School, where he was a standout three- sport athlete: football, baseball and basketball. He also played bass drum in the marching band. He enrolled in the ROTC program at The Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1955 with a degree in Mathematics. While at Penn State he played baseball, and he was also on the football practice squad for one year. He earned his Master's in Mathematics from Bucknell University.
Following the ROTC program at Penn State he served a term in the United States Marine Corps until his honorable discharge.
Bill taught high school mathematics at Lewisburg High School for over 30 years. He served as the assistant football coach and offensive coordinator for the Lewisburg Varsity Football team, including the fall 1981 undefeated team. He also coached the junior high boy's basketball team and led them to two consecutive undefeated seasons.
Bill enjoyed hiking, birdwatching, dry fly fishing and following his favorite sports teams - the Steelers, the Pirates, and Penn State football. Over the years he tutored many students in mathematics. He also played Santa Claus in several community events in the 1960s.
In addition to his wife Nancy, he is survived by two sons, Robert Thomas of Beavertown and John Thomas of Greensburg; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert (Bob) Thomas of Lewisburg and John (Jack) Thomas of Dewey Beach, DE.
He was preceded in death by a son, William (Billy) Thomas and a brother, Charles (Charlie) Thomas.
Family and friends are invited to visit with the family from 10:30 to 11 am on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Adamo Funeral Home, 16 Walnut Street, Mifflinburg at 11 am with Rev. Robert Rice officiating.
Interment will be in Mifflinburg Cemetery.
