Born on July 5, 1931, in New Berlin and lived there until 1993 when she moved to Shamokin Dam, PA. In 2017, she moved to Pennsfield Apartments in Selinsgrove, PA and resided there for 7 years. Velma is the daughter of the late Charles Lester Solomon and Plura Marie Solomon.
Velma attended New Berlin Elementary School and graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1949.
Velma began employment at her uncle’s garment factory in New Berlin during her high school years. After graduation, she was employed as a secretary by the PA Department of Welfare in Harrisburg, followed by the Revenue Office at Laurelton State School and later transferred to the Selinsgrove State School Center. She retired from the Selinsgrove Center in 1990 after having worked nearly 40 years with the PA Department of Welfare.
Velma was a member of the United Church of Christ in New Berlin since the age of 14. She served as a teacher in the kindergarten Sunday School class, led the junior choir and sang in the senior choir for many years.
Velma enjoyed traveling, especially her trips to California and Hawaii. Activities she most looked forward to were playing dominoes with family and meeting friends and family for meals. Favorite pastimes would include crossword puzzles and reading romance and mystery books. Velma always had a love for animals, especially cats and dogs. She very much appreciated the visits she received from therapy dogs while living in the nursing home. They always brightened her days and brought a smile!
Surviving is one sister, Velda E. Sassaman (age 97) who is a resident of Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village in Lewisburg, PA and several nieces and nephews who were her lifelong family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Lester Solomon (Buppy) and Plura Marie Solomon (née Kauffman), and her brother, Gavin Solomon of Shamokin Dam, PA.
