Norman Eugene "Gene" Metzger, 89, of 569 Turkey Run Road, Mifflinburg entered into rest at 12:15 pm on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at RiverWoods, Lewisburg, where he had been a guest since February.
He was born on January 1, 1923 in Elimsport, the son of the late Carson Edmund and Mildred (Jarrett) Metzger. On August 12, 1944, he married the former Mary Catharine Bower, who survives. Together, they shared 68 years of memories.
Gene was a farmer and a self employed electrician. He operated a farm in Elimsport until 1959, at which time he moved his family to a farm off of Driesbach Church Road, Mifflinburg, where he continued to be engaged in farming. Other employment included; delivering gas for Norman Baker of Cogan Station and Agway, doing mechanic work at Harvey Corson Implements, T.V. repair and working at the Selinsgrove Center.
He was a member of Elimsport United Methodist Church, Dreisbach United Church of Christ, and Dairyman's League, Mifflinburg Young Farmers, and the Buffalo Valley Grange.
Gene enjoyed playing cards, dominos and harmonica, as well as collecting Allis Chalmer tractors. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing and traveling; where they visited 48 States. His passions were hunting and fishing. He always enjoyed spending time with family; especially at the annual "Fishin with Pap" event, and with his cat, Socks.
Surviving are seven children; Barbara J. and Larry L. Zeller of Mifflinburg, Norman E. and Hetty Metzger, Jr. of Florida, Deborah L. and Larry L. Pfirman of Lewisburg, Joyce A. and Michael W. Ruhl of Mifflinburg, Joan M. and Willie Watimar of Mifflinburg, Wanda J. and Brad R. Shively of Millmont, Cris E. and Margaret Metzger of Mifflinburg, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, four sibling; Blanche and Fred McCormick of Allenwood, Dorothy and George Naugle of Montoursville, Bruce Metzger of Florida, Frank and Alice Metzger of Duboistown, one brother-in-law, Merrill Kratzer and his companion, Dottie Longacre of Selinsgrove.
He was preceded in death by a stillborn son, two brothers; Harold E. Metzger and Paul Metzger, two sisters; Lena Kratzer, Ruth Hummel, two sisters-in-laws; Betty Metzger and Jule Metzger, and two great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to the viewing from 11 to 12 on Saturday at the Dreisbach United Church of Christ, 875 Dreisbach Church Rd, Lewisburg, where the funeral will be held at Noon with the Rev. Michael C. Romig, officiating.
Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery.
