Leslie Eugene Sheary, 94, of 160 Applewood Drive, Lewisburg, formerly of Indian Head, MD passed away at 6:40 pm on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at his residence.
She was born on January 21, 1920 in Akron, a son of the late Harold Elion and Laura Gertrude (Roser) Sheary. On April 23, 1949, he married the former Cornelia Basky, who preceded him in death on October 2, 2003.
Leslie graduated from Akron North High School, class of 1937, and Kent State University, Ohio, class of 1941 with a B.S. in Liberal Arts. He then attended The Julliard School of Music, N.Y.C. in 1946.
Leslie served in the U.S. Army, Air Force, and Marines. While in the Armed Forces of the United States, was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, 4th award, the National Defense Service Medal with one bronze star; the American Theatre Ribbon; the Victory Medal of World War II; and the EAME Theatre Ribbon with one bronze star.
Mr. Sheary was an accomplished musician. He joined the 11th Army Air Force band in 1943, where he played flute for 2 years. He then joined the G.I. Symphony in 1945 and spent one year touring Europe after which he attended college for one year and then joined the Dallas Texas Symphony Orchestra for one year. In 1948 he joined the U.S. Air Force Band where he played the Flute and Piccolo for 5 years. He joined the Agnes DeMills Balliett Orchestra in 1953 and then played with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra for nearly one year. He joined the United States Marine Corps band in 1955 and served as first chair flutist until his retirement in 1968. His career of 22 years serving with military bands and orchestras was recognized by many honors at the time of his retirement in 1968.
He was a member of Davies Memorial Unitarian Church, Camp Springs, MD.
Leslie was the last of his immediate family. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joanne Marguerite Sheary.
Interment will be private in Penns Creek Union Cemetery.
