Joyce Marie Burrell Vought, 78, of Lewisburg, formerly of Hartleton, died at 2am on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Buffalo Valley Nursing Home in Lewisburg.
Joyce was born on Jan. 5, 1938 in Millheim, PA, the daughter of Matthew Burrell and Mary Schnure. She married John Mark Vought, Jr. of Mifflinburg who currently resides at Rhodesmere at the Buffalo Valley Retirement Village.
Other survivors include son Joseph, Sterling, VA; daughter Michelle, Normal, IL; two brothers Merle, Martin Burrell of City, MT, and Charles Burrell of Cowen; and three grandchildren-Kristin, Jonathan, and Nicholas.
Throughout her life, Joyce maintained an active membership in the Lutheran church and worked for the Aid Association for Lutherans as an administrative assistant and conducted pre-retirement workshops with her husband John. In addition, she taught cosmetology and also worked as a substitute teacher throughout the years at all levels.
As a young girl, she attended one room school in Hartleton, later graduated from Mifflinburg High School and eventually Millersville University where she earned an education degree. Returning to academics after starting a family, Joyce, an avid lifelong learner who instilled the value of education in her children, graduated from Millersville the same year her son Joe graduated from Gettysburg College.
Joyce had many artistic talents including painting, cosmetology, gardening, music, and teaching. She will always be remembered for her extraordinary thoughtfulness, her gentle spirit, and her radiant beauty.
Public visitation will be from 10 to 11 am on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Christ’s Lutheran Church, 100 3rd Street, Lewisburg, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Revs. William Henderson and Dennis Trout, officiating.
Burial will be at the Hartleton Cemetery following a light luncheon at the church.
