Eugene Lawrence Nickels Jr.

Eugene Lawrence Nickels Jr., 94, of Lewisburg, entered into rest on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village.

Born on August 29, 1930, in Roxborough, the son of the late Eugene L. Nickels and Amelia Sadie (Walde) Flexer. On May 20, 1961, in Bradford, PA, he married the former Gaye N. Douthit, who survives.

Gene was a graduate of Temple University, earning a bachelor of science degree in education.

He served in the US Army from March 16, 1952, until his honorable discharge on February 26, 1954.

Gene went on to work at the Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute, Philadelphia, Huntington State Hospital, Huntington, WV, Bradford Mental Health Clinic, Bradford, PA, and finally retired from the former Laurelton Center, where he was a unit manager.

He served as an Ombudsman at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village for 20 years, attended Glen Iron Pilgrim Holiness Church, and was a member of the VFW. Gene was also a founder and volunteer at Laurelton Youth Center.

He enjoyed hunting with his sons and fruit farming

In addition to his loving wife Gaye, he is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law: Clay A. and Ursula Nickels of Dillsburg, PA, Kenneth A. Nickels, and companion Linda Schultz of Nazareth.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Paul A. Flexer, and his mother, Amelia Flexer.

Family and friends are invited to the viewing from 10 to 11 AM on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Adamo Funeral Home, 16 Walnut Street, Mifflinburg. The funeral will be held at 11, with Pastor David Walter officiating.

The interment will be private on Friday at Fort Indiantown Gap Cemetery, Annville, PA.
